“We take out as many as we can.” Sorin pulled the dagger from his belt. “I’ll clear the path to the front door. Can’t be more than six…maybe seven, of them at most.”

“We get her out, head north,” Chaol murmured.

“To what…the ice?” Falconer hissed, keeping his voice low. “You want us to freeze our asses off and be killed by the beasts. You know what waits for us out there, Chaol.”

Silence filled the air for a heartbeat. What? What was out there?

“Vavilion's men won’t come. Not out there…it’s the only chance we have of staying alive. I’m all ears if you have another idea?” Chaol asked, and stared into Falconer’s searing gaze.

War…they were talking about war…and running.

My knees trembled…my power swirled. I was both sick and weak in that moment.

Both frightened and alive.

Standing on the edge of the greatest moment of my life. We could run, leave these castle walls and Kamoril's cruelty for good. I’d be free…free…cold but free.

Until the vision of that night claimed me. The night I'd crossed the threshold and made an alliance with my blood. The night that started this all. She was wrath, my sister, unmerciful, uncontrollable, even with three powerful Hexers by her side. Ever had run, she’d battled, and she’d fought, and look what happened to her.

She’d still fallen. After everything they’d endured.

The haunting desperation of my sister’s Hexers stayed with me. That connection I’d felt this morning was long gone, but the words remained. Words that bounced around in the darkness of my mind. Words I couldn’t bear to hear from my own Hexers' lips.

Witch! Wilds's roar filled my head. She will tear this world apart!

No. I couldn’t let that happen. I’d hold on to the connection we shared. What could Kamoril do to me? Lock me in a cell? I was already a prisoner…already confined within these walls, never once stepping foot outside the castle gates. I needed to be sure of them. I needed to learn who they were under the stony gazes and their constant hovering.

“No.” I lifted my gaze to theirs. “No killing. No fighting, not for me. Kamoril won’t hurt me and he won’t let Vavilion hurt me, either. So I’ll stay here. I’ll wait for Kamoril to come.”

“That’s not an option,” Chaol disagreed, and shook his head. Desperation roared in those bottomless eyes. “Vavilion has made the King unstable. You don’t know how he’s going to react.”

“Then I’ll give him what he wants,” I whispered, but even as I said the words, I trembled with fear.

“Over my dead fucking body,” Chaol growled, and straightened his spine. “If he as much as lays a hand on you…”

Images filled my mind, terrifying images of Kamoril and his latest victim. He’d hurt her and he’d enjoyed it. I shook my head. “Not that. I’ll give him my power. That’s far greater than anything he could do to my body.”

“I couldn’t stand it if he touched you,” Sorin broke in, his gaze searing into mine. “I’d kill him, cut out his motherfucking eyes, King or not.
